Norway Customs Information

Customs Information

Please take a moment to review the important customs information before shipping to Norway.

Personal Effects Customs Clearance Norway

Norwegian customs normally only require a packing list detailing the contents of the shipment and a copy of the owner's passport to complete clearance.

Larger shipments of more than 3 pieces or exceeding a total weight of 75kg, and shipments with a high declared value, may require further information to be provided to customs before the shipment is approved for import.  Typically this will be the Norwegian Social Security Number of the consignee and an additional declaration form however other details may be requested at customs discretion.

Should further information be needed, our courier partner in Norway will contact the consignee directly to request this.  If they are unable to reach the consignee or do not receive the additional information required immediately, storage charges will be incurred of around 47 NOK per day.  The consignee should therefore ensure they provide a local Norwegian contact number they can be reached on.

General Personal Effects Customs Information

Personal effects are typically defined as used items which have been in the sender's possession for 6 months or more. If your shipment is checked by  customs and is found to contain brand new or commercial items, you shipment may not be assessed as personal effects. Keep this in mind if you are sending Christmas gifts or other new items. Please check with customs so you are aware of potential customs duties, follow any advice given and attach all necessary documentation.

In order to demonstrate that your shipment consists of personal effects, you will be required to complete a brief non-generic packing list online, entries to be made in the format: "5 x Cotton Dresses, 2 x Jeans, 3 x Pair of Gloves", and so on, rather than as "10 x Used Clothing".

As customs processes and allowances vary by country, we advise all customers take 5 minutes to check how their personal circumstances and what they are sending will be assessed under the prevailing customs regulations of the destination.

More information is available on our customs information page.

Customs Clearance Time

Most shipments on this route will not be stopped by customs, however, when a bag is stopped by customs for any reason (missing documentation, impromptu inspection, prohibited contents, commercial contents or further information required) Send My Bag records how long customs hold it for. Our historical statistics for this route indicate that if the customs authority stops your bag they will on average take 4 working days to process it and release it back to us for delivery.

Shipping Gifts to Norway

Norwegian customs allow gifts up to a value of 1000 NOK to be sent free from duties and taxes provided they are from private individual to private individual.

Where multiple gifts are being sent in the same consignment for multiple people, each person can receive a gift allowance up to 1000 NOK providing the gifts are individually wrapped and marked for the different intended recipients. On the packing list, each item listed will need to have a name next to the description of each gift as to clearly mark for customs who the intended recipient is.

About Norway

About Norway

Norway is a Scandinavian country situated on the North Sea and the Arctic Ocean, bordering Finland, Sweden and Russia. It uses the Norwegian Krone as its currency and, although there are a large number of languages spoken in the country, Norwegian is the primary and official one. Norway has a huge amount of attractions for tourists, varying from modern and cosmopolitan towns and cities to the fjord-filled coastline and snow-capped mountains.

The climate of Norway can be extremely varied depending on the season and location. Due to some parts of Norway being very far North ‒ on the same latitude as Alaska, Greenland and Siberia, in fact ‒ winter can be very cold with temperatures dropping even below -40°C (-40°F).  Summer, however, can reach comparatively high temperatures up to the high 20°Cs (~80°F). The northern parts of Norway experience long dark winters as well as midnight sun during the summer months.

The major tourist city in Norway is Oslo, known for its beautiful setting and for being very fashionable, with a fantastic cultural scene and buzzing nightlife. If you plan to head to the countryside of Norway, you’ll get to see spectacular mountains and fjords, and, if you are lucky, you could see the Northern Lights in the north. Many tourists flock to Norway for its winter sports, with the resorts of Hemsedal and Trysil being very popular among skiers and snowboarders.

Other Ways of Shipping to Norway

Other Ways of Shipping to Norway

As well as sending parcels, baggage and luggage to Norway you could look into the following alternatives for shipping items internationally, especially if you need to send large, bulky items like furniture.

Air Freight to Norway

Bulky items like a desk or armchair could be sent to Norway using air freight. Sending items by air freight usually takes a couple of days, but can be pricey. How much you pay is dependent on the weight and size of your shipment. You will probably also have to use the services of a customs agent to handle customs clearance for you. And, you need to get your items to and from the airport. Costs could, therefore, be quite high. If you send internationally by air freight to Norway your items will likely arrive at one of the major airports, such as Oslo, Bergen and Stravanger Airports.

Sea Freight and Container Shipping to Norway

Rather than air freight, you could choose sea freight or container shipping to transport your possessions to Norway. This is a good option if you don’t need your items immediately. Again, this option is usually used when shipping large bulky items, such as a console table or even a car. Sea freight usually means shipping items in large containers loaded onto cargo ships. It can be less expensive than air freight, but you will still need to use the services of a customs agent and will need to sort out how to get your items to and from the ports. So, the cost could be more than expected. When using container shipping to Norway your items will most likely arrive by ship at one of the major sea ports such as Bergen, Oslo or Trondheim.

Shipping Goods to Norway

When shipping goods to Norway you need to be aware of the current customs rules. You should know about any duty that you need to pay and what items are allowed to be shipped to Norway, which items are restricted, and which are entirely prohibited.  Take a look at the prohibited items and customs sections on this page for more information.
