About Columbia University

Founded in 1754, Columbia University is the oldest institution of higher education in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the US. The American Revolution caused the institution to stop teaching for eight years, but it opened again in 1784 with a new name – Columbia.

It wasn’t until 1897 that the university moved to its current location at 116th Street and Broadway in Upper Manhattan. Over 8,700 international students (2012/13) form part of the Columbia student body.

New York City has three main airports – John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark International Airport. There are various modes of transportation from the airports into the city. One of the most cost effective is a shared shuttle bus service, such as Super Shuttle, which will take you to your destination of choice.

Alternatively you can take a train or bus from other major destinations to New York. Trains generally stop at Grand Central Station or Pennsylvania Station and buses stop at the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Once within the city, there is a vast network of subways and bus routes run by MTA. The Number 1 local train stops at 116th Street/ Columbia University. This route runs from South Ferry in Lower Manhattan to Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. It stops at Times Square, which has several connections to other subway trains.

Five bus routes serve the Columbia area: M4, M5, M11, M60 and M104.

There is an Inter-Campus Shuttle bus connecting the main campus, the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia Medical Centre and affiliate Harlem Hospital.

The École normale supérieure was founded in 1793 and is today a prestigious institution with a rigorous selection process for prospective students. Paris has four main airports: Charles de Gaulle (main international airport), Orly (second international airport) and Beauvais-Tillé (largely budget airlines).

You can generally reach the city centre from these airports using the RER network or a shuttle bus (from Beauvais-Tillé).

You can also take the train to Paris from many European destinations, including from London using the Eurostar, which stops at Paris Gare du Nord, and which is, in turn, connected to other areas of the city via the metro network.

The École normale supérieure is mostly situated in the Latin Quarter of Paris, largely in the area of Rue d’Ulm. This area is served by the Number 7 (pink) metro line. 'Censier-Daubenton' is one of the closest stops.

Getting to École polytechique fédérale de Lausanne

EPFL is situated in Lausanne in Switzerland, beside Lake Geneva.

The closest airport is Genève-Cointrin, which is around 60 minutes away.

You can take a train from the airport to Lausanne (Gare CFF), and then take the metro to the EPFL campus (Gare CFF to Gare du Flon on line M2, direction Croisettes, and then change to line M1, direction Renens, and get off at EPFL).

Alternatively, you can reach Lausanne by train from various locations in Europe, including Zürich Airport, which is 2hr 30 mins away from Lausanne.

Several local buses stop at EPFL, including MBC bus 701, MBC bus 705 and TL bus 31.

About ETH Zürich

ETH Zürich was set up in 1855 as the Federal Polytechnical School. In 1911 it assumed its present name, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule. It is the sister university of EPFL – École polytechique fédérale de Lausanne. The institution is said to be a driving force behind industrialisation in Switzerland and, today, the institution continues to attract students and researchers from all over the world in the field of technical study and research.

Getting to ETH Zürich

The main ETH Zürich campus is located on Rämistrasse in central Zürich.

Zürich airport is not far from the university. To get from the airport to the university you can either take tram Number 10 to the ETH/Universitätsspital stop (journey time 30 mins) or take the train (S-Bahn or mainline services) from Zürich Airport Station to Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) (journey time 10 mins).

Or, you can travel to Zürich by train, given its rail links with many regions of Europe. Most trains will stop at Central Station (Hauptbahnhof). You can then take tram Number 6 from the station to the ETH/Universitätsspital stop (journey time 6 mins).

About Purdue University

Purdue University first began teaching in 1874 to just 39 students. Today the University has over 38,700 students, of which there are over 9,000 international students. It is a university with many traditions, including the term ‘Boilermaker’, which began as a name for the University’s athletics team but which is now often used to refer to all things Purdue.

Getting to Purdue University

The Purdue main campus is located in West Lafayette, Indiana and is accessible from Indianapolis and Chicago O’Hare international airports.

From Indianapolis International Airport you can take a shuttle service to Purdue, including Lafayette Limo and Star of America. The airport is 65 miles from the University.

From Chicago O’Hare International Airport, you can take an Express Air Coach or Lafayette Limo shuttle bus. This airport is 140 miles from the University.

An Amtrak train to Lafayette is available from Indianapolis, Chicago and several other cities.

You can take the Continental Express Shuttle from O’Hare Airport to the Amtrak station (Union Station) in Chicago, or to the Greyhound Bus Terminal. Greyhound provides transport in the Lafayette-West Lafayette area from neighbouring urban hubs.

The closest airport to Heidelberg is Frankfurt Airport, which offers many international routes.

To reach Heidelberg from the airport, take the high-speed train, ICE. Frankfurt airport has a train station inside the terminal.

Using the same Deutsche Bahn rail network, you can also reach Heidelberg from many other European destinations. The local rail network around Heidelberg is also very extensive.

Within the city itself, there is an efficient tram and bus network.

To reach the main university site from the train station, take bus line 32 to Uniplatz (University Square).

The closest airport is Copenhagen International Airport Kastrup, only 8 km south of the city centre.

You can take the train or metro for about 15 minutes from the airport to the city centre.

Copenhagen is also connected by train to other destinations, and you can easily take the s-train, metro or bus from any of the three main train stations in the city. Hovedbanegården is Copenhagen’s Central Station.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)

About the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The University is in the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana, which is about 140 miles south of Chicago and 125 miles west of Indianapolis. The Urbana-Champaign area is served by the University of Illinois Willard Airport, from which there is one daily flight to Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport and six daily flights to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

There is also a shuttle service between O’Hare and Urbana-Champaign run by the University in the Fall semester for international students.

The EAC Shuttle travels between O’Hare and Champaign-Urbana.

Greyhound runs a daily bus service between Chicago and Champaign.

Amtrak provide a train between Chicago and Champaign.

To travel from Willard Airport or the train/ bus depot in downtown Champaign, use the following services:

MTD: 21/ 270 Air Bus from Willard Airport to the campus on weekdays and Saturdays (free if boarding at Willard).
