Ever wondered what luggage you are allowed to bring on board a train? it may not be as much as you think. Most train lines have limits of three bags, of which one must be a small item of hand luggage. They often charge fees for extra bags, or those with dimensions over 1 metre. Or, they may be forced to turn your luggage away due to limited storage space. So, don't get caught out by making sure you have all the information on your train line's baggage policy before you travel. Arriva Trains Wales Baggage Allowances

On Arriva Trains in Wales you can bring two large items of luggage, plus a smaller item of hand luggage that can sit in your lap, if necessary.

If your luggage occupies a seat next to you, you may be charged for this. Any additional items may also be charged for. You should be able to manage this luggage without assistance. If you have a disability, you can request assistance with luggage in advance.

Eurostar Baggage Allowance

On the Eurostar adults are permitted 2 pieces of luggage up to 85 cm, plus an items of hand luggage. There is no weight restriction but you must be able to carry your luggage yourself.

On the French Alps direct ski train you can also bring one piece of hand luggage, plus skis or snowboard.

Children between 4 and 11 years of age are allowed one piece of luggage up to 85 cm long, plus one piece of hand luggage.

South West allows passengers to bring bikes with them. Space for bicycles is, however, limited. The best option is to bring a folding bicycle, as this can be stowed in a number of places on the train.

There is space for non-folding bikes, but this are few in number, and it is a good idea to phone ahead and check whether a reservation is necessary and, indeed, whether you will need to pay a charge. The London Waterloo to Salisbury/Exeter/Bristol routes always require a reservation for bikes. Certain routes do not allow bicycles, and at certain peak times, space is even more restricted than normal. Consult their cycle restrictions map to see if your route/ time of travel are affected.

Staff have the right to refuse any luggage when space does not permit. Items may be rejected if they aren’t packaged properly or if the item may cause injury. Certain items are also restricted. These include canoes, skis, golf equipment, and musical instruments over 30 x 70 x 90 cm.

Some domestic animals may travel with you but must not be placed on seats. 

SouthEastern Trains Baggage Allowance

Translink allow small animals on board, free of charge, except before 09:30 am. Assistance dogs are permitted to board at any time. There is a limit of one animal per person. Animals must be small enough to be kept near the feet of the owner without causing obstruction and kept on a lead at all times. Virgin allows their rail passengers to travel with a good amount of luggage. You can bring with you two items of larger luggage, not exceeding 30 x 70 x 90 cm. You may also carry one piece of hand luggage that could fit on your lap.

There is no specific weight restriction, but you have to be able to lift your luggage onto the train unaided.

The luggage allowed may also be dependent on available space on your train and, if carrying very large items, an additional charge may be levied.

2 pets can be brought on board free of charge.

Bikes can be brought on board, but space to store these is limited. You should, therefore, book a space for your bike in advance (this doesn’t apply to fold-up bikes). This is free of charge. Note that there is a specific carriage in which you can store your bike, so give yourself plenty of time to find it before the train is due to depart. You should also obtain a tag for your bike showing where it needs to be unloaded.

Your luggage can be placed either on the overhead luggage racks, under or behind your seat, or in the designated luggage areas near the doors. You can only place luggage on the seat beside you if have purchased a ticket for that additional seat.
