United Airlines have announced they will axe the popular direct flight route from Belfast International airport to New York after 9th January when the final departure from Belfast will take place.
The removal of the route comes as a huge blow as it is the only regular direct route between the USA and Northern Ireland and is used to promote Northern Ireland to would-be investors from the United States.
The news comes only months after a £9m rescue deal was agreed to save the route from being discontinued earlier this year. United have advised the decision to remove the route was based on the poor financial performance of the route.
A spokesperson from United has advised they will “contact customers with bookings for flights beyond those dates to provide refunds and re-accommodate where possible”.
