55% of British Expats Say They Won’t Return Home as Life Abroad Becomes the New Normal
Monday, 16 Feb 2026

A new survey shows that more than half of British expats have no plans to return home while their priorities for work, lifestyle and long-term planning continue to shift overseas.
A recent survey of 1,500 British expats reveals a significant change in how UK citizens are thinking about living abroad. 55% of respondents say they will never permanently return to the UK, 30% say they might return eventually, and 15% plan to move back within the next few years.
Rising living costs, career opportunities, lifestyle choices and long-term planning are all shaping this new reality. Many expats are thinking beyond short-term relocation and focusing on making overseas life permanent, from planning their finances and property to arranging belongings and personal effects.
42% say they moved abroad for lifestyle and wellbeing. Improving work-life balance, access to outdoor activities, and a slower pace of life are top drivers.
35% relocated for career and financial opportunities. Better job prospects, higher salaries, or tax advantages are encouraging long-term stays overseas.
23% cite family or personal reasons. Joining relatives, following a partner, or pursuing education abroad influences their decision to relocate.

Top Destinations in 2026 for Expats
Australia 27%
United States 19%
Spain 14%
Portugal 12%

Weather, healthcare, safety and career prospects are the main drivers for staying overseas. Many respondents said they prefer the lifestyle and opportunities abroad over returning home.
Few comments from the survey said:
“I love the work-life balance here. The slower pace and access to nature make every day feel better than I expected.”
“The cost of living is high, but the weather and lifestyle make it worth it. I don’t see myself moving back anytime soon.”
“I came for work but stayed for life. It’s easier to plan long-term here than juggling everything in the UK.”
Darren Johnston from Send My Bag commented:
“These findings show that life abroad is no longer just a temporary adventure. British expats are planning for the long term and thinking carefully about their finances, belongings and families. The focus has shifted to making life overseas stable, enjoyable and secure, and that means planning ahead is more important than ever.”
