British Airways Baggage Allowance & Excess Luggage Fees

Check British Airways Baggage Size Restrictions and Fees Before You Travel.

CARRY-ON ALLOWANCE

Adults and children over the age of two years are permitted to carry on board one cabin bag and one personal item (such as a laptop or handbag).

A cabin bag must not exceed  22 x 18 x 10in and a personal item must not exceed 16 x 12 x 6in. Each bag must weigh no more than 51lb.

Infants under the age of two years are allowed one cabin bag only, and only for items they may require during the flight.

IF YOUR BAG IS OVERWEIGHT/ OVERSIZED

If a bag exceeds the allowable dimensions, or weight, or if a customer is carrying more than the permitted two items of carry-on luggage, items will be stowed in the hold and will count towards the customer’s checked baggage allowance. If this then takes the customer over their checked baggage allowance (where applicable), they will be charged for extra baggage at the airport rate.

CHECKED-IN BAGGAGE

The amount of checked baggage allowed on British Airways flights depends on the customer’s fare type and route travelled.

‘Hand baggage only’ fares do not allow checked baggage free of charge, but bags can be added to a hand baggage only booking, with prices ranging from $30 to $100 per bag, one way, depending on the route travelled and whether you purchase your allowance online or at the airport.

‘Economy’ allowances vary according to destination.

The following destinations allow adults and children over two years of age two items of checked luggage up to a maximum of 51lb each: Flying to and from Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone; connecting between India and USA/Bermuda/Canada; connecting from Saudi Arabia to USA/Bermuda/Canada.

Travel to/ from Brazil allows two checked bags up to a maximum weight of 70lb each.

All other economy fares allow one item of checked luggage up to 51lb.

Elite fare types include higher luggage allowances.

The dimensions of a checked bag must be within 35.5 x 29.5 x 16in, including any handles, pockets and wheels. Currently, larger items of up to 175 x 29.5 x 25.5in can also be carried due to a fee waiver that is in place.

CHILDREN'S LUGGAGE

Infants under two years of age on economy fares are allowed only one item of hold luggage at 51lb, plus a fully collapsible pushchair and car seat.

EXCESS BAGGAGE FEES

Excess baggage fees apply to checked baggage outside the fare holder’s weight allowance. These fees stand at $100 per overweight bag. Bags over 70lb cannot be carried as checked luggage.  Charges also apply for any extra bags you may wish to carry outside your allowance.

EXCEPTIONAL ITEMS

Many exceptional baggage items, such as sports equipment and musical instruments, can be checked as part of free checked baggage allowances, or smaller items may be carried on board. British Airways tries to accommodate most exceptional items, even if these are over the standard baggage limits. It is advisable to contact the airline before travel to make arrangements.
