Important Information

Returning Irish Citizens and Residents and those who are relocating to Ireland will be charged an additional 20€ fee by our courier partner for completing customs clearance which will be billed to the receiver in Ireland and is not covered by Send My Bag.
No additional handling fees apply to shipments of temporary imports such as holiday or business trip, or for those are moving to Ireland to study.
Documents Required (All customers)
- Passport
A copy of the consignee’s passport details page is required.
- Flight Ticket
A copy of the consignee’s flight ticket dated within 6 months of the shipment's arrival in Ireland is required. This must show travel from the same country that the shipment is being sent from. If the consignee has travelled in multiple journeys between the origin and Ireland this is acceptable, and multiple flight tickets can be provided.

- Outbound Flight Tickets from Ireland
Irish customs will require copies of the consignee’s flight tickets showing their travel from Ireland to the country they are now shipping from, in addition to their flight tickets showing their return to Ireland.
- Goods must be of EU origin for duty relief.
Duty relief is only applicable to goods purchased within the EU and you will be asked to declare this when completing your customs paperwork via your Send My Bag account. Goods of Non-EU origin cannot be cleared duty free, and any duties and taxes will be billed by our courier partner to the receiver in Ireland before the shipment can be delivered.
Temporary Imports for a holiday or business trip.
- Return or Onward Flight Ticket
The consignee will need to provide copies of their flight tickets showing their onward travel leaving Ireland (this does not need to be back to the shipping country), as well as their inbound flight tickets to Ireland from the country they are shipping from.
- Customs Form
An additional customs declaration form will need to be attached to the shipment, which you can download along with the other shipping documentation from your Send My Bag account.
Transferring your permanent residence to Ireland having been living in another country for 1 year or more.
Good must be imported within 6 months prior or up to 12 months after the date the consignee has transferred their resident to Ireland. Tools used in a trade are not given any duty relief by Irish customs and duties and taxes will be applied.
- Proof of Employment abroad.
Irish customs will require evidence of employment outside of Ireland such as a employment contract. Typically, payslips are not accepted unless they cover a period of one year or more.
- Proof of leaving or living in a property abroad
This can be confirmation of a house sale, evidence of renting or leasing a property, or mortgage statements.
If the consignee was living somewhere were the tenancy agreement or mortgage etc was in another person's name e.g. a partner or family member, they can provide a copy of the these documents or a utility bill in that person's name, and provide a letter of explanation and I.D. in the name of that person.
- Proof of daily living abroad
This can in the form or bank statements or utility bills. These documents must be dated at least 6 months before your shipment's arrival date, and no more than 12 months old.
- Proof of purchasing or leasing a home in Ireland
This can be confirmation of a house purchase, evidence of renting or leasing a property, or mortgage statements.
If the consignee is living somewhere were the tenancy agreement or mortgage etc is another person's name e.g. a partner or family member, they can provide a copy of the these documents or a utility bill in that person's name, and provide a letter of explanation and I.D. in the name of that person.

Students will need to provide a copy of their enrolment certificate or letter from their college or university for their goods to be cleared duty free. Please ensure the document clearly shows the student's name along with the full name and address of the college or university.
General Personal Effects Customs Information
Personal effects are typically defined as used items which have been in the sender's possession for 6 months or more. If your shipment is checked by customs and is found to contain brand new or commercial items, you shipment may not be assessed as personal effects. Keep this in mind if you are sending Christmas gifts or other new items. Please check with customs so you are aware of potential customs duties, follow any advice given and attach all necessary documentation.
In order to demonstrate that your shipment consists of personal effects, you will be required to complete a brief non-generic packing list online, entries to be made in the format: "5 x Cotton Dresses, 2 x Jeans, 3 x Pair of Gloves", and so on, rather than as "10 x Used Clothing".
As customs processes and allowances vary by country, we advise all customers take 5 minutes to check how their personal circumstances and what they are sending will be assessed under the prevailing customs regulations of the destination.

Customs Clearance Time
Most shipments on this route will not be stopped by customs, however, when a bag is stopped by customs for any reason (missing documentation, impromptu inspection, prohibited contents, commercial contents or further information required) Send My Bag records how long customs hold it for. Our historical statistics for this route indicate that if the customs authority stops your bag they will on average take 2 working days to process it and release it back to us for delivery.
Shipping Gifts to Ireland
Ireland allows correctly declared gifts to enter the country duty free provided the value does not exceed €45. Irish customs advise they will not collect VAT amounting to €6 or less should the declared value be more than €45.
Our courier partner will also charge an extra 5€ fee for each additional line on the packing list once more than 5 lines are entered.
The consignee is responsible for payment of any duties, VAT, and courier handling fees.
