Egypt Customs Information

Customs Information

Please take a moment to review the important customs information before shipping to Egypt.

Personal Effects Customs Clearance Egypt

Holiday baggage and other time sensitive packages should not be sent on this route.

The volume of shipments sent to this destination across the last 12 weeks has not been sufficient to meet our minimum number of on time shipments required for holiday baggage approval.

Consignee will need to present their Passport and Entry stamp to Egyptian customs before the items will be released for final delivery. Therefore, if sending items ahead of your travels, items will only be cleared once the consignee is in the country.

If the consignee of the shipment is unable to provide customs with the required information within 3 days of the shipment's arrival, Egyptian customs will charge a storage fee of roughly 3 EGP per kilo, per day.

On this route, you are required to visit the destination country’s official customs website and make yourself aware of any requirements, processes or fees, which may be due based on your personal circumstances and what you are shipping.

Upon arrival in the destination, you agree to comply with any customs processes, provide the customs authority with any information they request and to discuss the clearance of the shipment directly with the customs authority or our delivery partner in the destination.

General Personal Effects Customs Information

Personal effects are typically defined as used items which have been in the sender's possession for 6 months or more. If your shipment is checked by  customs and is found to contain brand new or commercial items, you shipment may not be assessed as personal effects. Keep this in mind if you are sending Christmas gifts or other new items. Please check with customs so you are aware of potential customs duties, follow any advice given and attach all necessary documentation.

In order to demonstrate that your shipment consists of personal effects, you will be required to complete a brief non-generic packing list online, entries to be made in the format: "5 x Cotton Dresses, 2 x Jeans, 3 x Pair of Gloves", and so on, rather than as "10 x Used Clothing".

As customs processes and allowances vary by country, we advise all customers take 5 minutes to check how their personal circumstances and what they are sending will be assessed under the prevailing customs regulations of the destination.

More information is available on our customs information page.

About Egypt

About Egypt

Egypt is a large country in the north of Africa, on the Mediterranean Sea, located beside Libya, Sudan and Israel. Egypt is known for its ancient monuments, including the Temple of Hatshepsut, the Great Sphinx and many pyramids. Also a great draw for tourists are the many holiday resorts located along the country’s coastline, which easily rival southern European resorts.

Egypt’s capital city of Cairo is the largest city in the whole of Africa with a very high population density. It is also heavily populated with places of interest to occupy the most energetic of visitors. Things to visit include the Gizeh Plateau, the Egyptian Antiquities Museum, the Saqqara Pyramids, the Mohamed Ali Mosque, and many more linked to Egypt’s ancient past as home to one of the most powerful dynasties in history.

There is also plenty to see in other regions of Egypt. The city of Alexandria is another treasure trove of historical sites and museums. Here you can visit the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa or peruse the collections in the Alexandria National Museum or the Royal Jewelery Museum.

Egypt’s coastal resorts are loved by holidaymakers, who can enjoy snorkelling, scuba diving, wind surfing and many other water sports there. Popular areas for holidaymakers include Sharm El Sheikh, Nabq Bay and Hurghada.

Egypt has a desert climate with hot summers and mild winters. The average temperature in Cairo in January is 14°C (56°F), and 28°C (82°F) in July.  In the springtime, Egypt can also experience dust storms, which are known as hamsin.

Other Ways of Shipping to Egypt

Other Ways of Shipping to Egypt

As well as sending parcels, baggage and luggage to Egypt you could look into the following alternatives for shipping items internationally, especially if you need to send large, bulky items like furniture.

Air Freight to Egypt

You could try air freight to send large bulky items like a snooker table or a bed. This kind of service usually takes one to two days but can be quite an expensive option. The bigger/ heavier your shipment, the more you will have to pay. You will probably also have to pay for the services of a customs agent to look after customs clearance for you, and you need to think about the cost of getting your items to and from the airport. The price could, therefore, quickly mount up. If you send internationally by air freight to Egypt your items will likely arrive at one of the major airports such as Cairo Airport or Alexandria Airport.

Sea Freight and Container Shipping to Egypt

You could opt instead for sea freight or container shipping to transport your possessions to Egypt. This is another option for big bulky items. Since sea freight can take a number of weeks, it is best if you don’t need to receive your items immediately. This option can be cheaper than air freight, but you will still need to use the services of a customs agent and will need to arrange how to get your items to and from the ports. This means the cost could be more than expected. When using container shipping to Egypt, your items will likely arrive at the Port of Damietta or Port Said.

Shipping Goods to Egypt

You must make yourself aware of current customs rules when shipping goods to Egypt. Make sure you know about any duty that you need to pay and what items are allowed to be shipped to Egypt, which items are restricted, and which are entirely prohibited. Take a look at the prohibited items and customs sections on this page for more information.
