Important Nigeria Customs Information

Most countries offer a generous duty free allowance for personal effects and the majority of Send My Bag™ shipments worldwide will not be stopped by customs.

Personal effects are usually assessed as used items which have been in the sender's possession for 6 months or more. If your bag is checked by customs and is found to contain brand new or commercial items your shipment may be assessed for customs duties and taxes. If you are sending Christmas gifts please check with the destination country so you are aware of potential customs duties, follow their advice and attach all necessary documentation.

Customs processes and allowances do vary by country and as such we advise all travellers take 5 minutes to check how their personal circumstances and what they are sending will be assessed under the prevailing customs regulations of the destination.

When a bag is stopped by customs for any reason (missing documentation, prohibited contents, commercial contents or further information required) Send My Bag™ records how long customs hold it for. Our historical statistics for this route indicate that if the customs authority stops your bag they will on average take 2 days to process it and release it back to us for delivery.

More information is available in on our customs information page.

In order to demonstrate your shipment is personal effects you will be required to complete a brief non generic packing list online, entries to be made in the format: "5 x Cotton T-Shirts, 2 x Jeans, 3 x Cotton Shirt" and so on rather than as "10 x Used Clothing".

Nigeria is situated in Western Africa, between Benin and Cameroon. It has the biggest population of any African country (177,155,754 people) and is made up of more than 250 ethnic groups. The official language of the country is English but there are many other indigenous languages being used - over 500, in fact. The country’s currency is the Nigerian Naira. The country’s weather is often dry and hot, with an average maximum temperature of 86°F in April and an average minimum temperature of 75°F in December/ January.

The capital of Nigeria is Abuja, but Lagos remains its largest city, at 385.9 square miles, and with a population of 7,937,932. A visit to Lagos is not for the faint-hearted, given that it is incredibly busy and polluted and that there is a high crime rate. Quieter cities, such as Oshogbo, however, are worth a visit. In Oshogbo you can visit the Osun Sacred Grove, which is thought to be the residence of Osun, the Yoruba fertility goddess. The Grove is filled with the sculptures of Austrian-born artist Suzanne Wenger and those of her pupils. Wenger was responsible for reviving the Grove and became ordained as a Yoruba priestess. Calabar in the southeast has also been described as a tourist-friendly city with a number of visitor attractions.

You can fly into Nigeria from many international destinations. International airports are located in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu.

If you are an experienced traveler, you may be drawn to this more unusual vacation destination, in which case SendMyBag can send your luggage to your hotel, so it is waiting for you on arrival. This means that you do not have to drag it on to public transport, which may have to traverse some uneven terrain. This also means that you can sail through the airport without having to wait in line at bag drop or wait around at luggage carousels.

You may be traveling to Nigeria as an aid worker. SendMyBag can ship your possessions to your accommodation to allow you to quickly set up a home away from home and help ease your homesickness. You can also use SendMyBag to send gifts home to family or to receive care packages from your friends and family and so keep in touch with them.

NB That many governments are warning against travel to certain areas of Nigeria. Check with your government’s website to find out more.

You should also be aware that you will likely need to apply for a visa to enter Nigeria.

Before sending your luggage unaccompanied to or from Nigeria, you will be asked to fill out a brief customs form and attach it to your baggage. You will also be asked to fill out a packing list in the customer area of our website; don’t worry this is simple and only takes a matter of minutes. The purpose of the packing list is to establish the value of your items when moving across international borders.

It is also important that you do not pack any restricted or illegal items in your luggage; this includes food and plants, weapons, drugs, tobacco or money. These items will be confiscated upon arrival. If you’re unsure about a particular item you can contact our team of experts for advice.

As always, please ensure that all of your information is correct before sending your bag especially your full name, home address and the address of the destination.
