Malaysia Customs Information

Customs Information

Please take a moment to review the important customs information before shipping to Malaysia.

Personal Effects Customs Clearance Malaysia

Holiday baggage and other time sensitive packages should not be sent on this route.

The volume of shipments sent to this destination across the last 12 weeks has not been sufficient to meet our minimum number of on time shipments required for holiday baggage approval.

Malaysian customs require a detailed list of the personal effects being shipped and a copy of the consignee’s passport matching the named receiver on the order.

Shipments with a declared value exceeding $145 will incur a 24hr customs clearance delay and will be inspected by Malaysian officials.

On some occasions, an additional fee of 25MYR (c. £5 / $6 USD) may be incurred for customs processing which will need to be paid by the consignee prior to delivery being completed.

On this route, you are required to visit the destination country’s official customs website and make yourself aware of any requirements, processes or fees, which may be due based on your personal circumstances and what you are shipping.

Upon arrival in the destination, you agree to comply with any customs processes, provide the customs authority with any information they request and to discuss the clearance of the shipment directly with the customs authority or our delivery partner in the destination.

General Personal Effects Customs Information

Personal effects are typically defined as used items which have been in the sender's possession for 6 months or more. If your shipment is checked by  customs and is found to contain brand new or commercial items, you shipment may not be assessed as personal effects. Keep this in mind if you are sending Christmas gifts or other new items. Please check with customs so you are aware of potential customs duties, follow any advice given and attach all necessary documentation.

In order to demonstrate that your shipment consists of personal effects, you will be required to complete a brief non-generic packing list online, entries to be made in the format: "5 x Cotton Dresses, 2 x Jeans, 3 x Pair of Gloves", and so on, rather than as "10 x Used Clothing".

As customs processes and allowances vary by country, we advise all customers take 5 minutes to check how their personal circumstances and what they are sending will be assessed under the prevailing customs regulations of the destination.

More information is available on our customs information page.

Customs Clearance Time

When a bag is stopped by customs for any reason (missing documentation, impromptu inspection, prohibited contents, commercial contents or further information required) Send My Bag records how long customs hold it for. Our historical statistics for this route indicate that if the customs authority stops your bag they will on average take 3 working days to process it and release it back to us for delivery.

About Malaysia

About Malaysia

Malaysia is a South-East Asian country situated, in part, on a peninsula on the Asian mainland, and partly in the north part of the island of Borneo. Malaysia borders Thailand on the west and is connected via a causeway and bridge to Singapore. The climate of Malaysia is typically tropical, with little variation in temperature throughout the year, averaging between 26°C (79°F) in the mountains and 28°C (82°F)on the coasts, with high humidity year-round. Malaysia has a dry season between June and September and a rainy season between December and March linked to the monsoons. The official language in Malaysia is Bahasa Malaysia, a standardised form of Malay, and the currency used is the Malaysian Ringgit.

Malaysia is known especially for its rich cultural heritage with its hugely mixed population of Malays, Chinese, Indians and other indigenous groups. Many people travel through the country as part of organised trips or backpacking tours of South East Asia. The major tourist cities are Kuala Lumpur ‒ home to the Petronas Towers ‒ and George Town, the capital of Penang.

Tourists are also drawn to Malaysia’s huge expanses of coast, beaches and islands. Snorkelling is a popular activity for tourists, whether they are beginners or advanced. The festivals celebrated annually are amazing to see, as are the tropical rainforests such as Taman Negara, home to a huge range of native plant and animal species. Traditional arts and rural crafts are popular in the stunning and accessible countryside, and tourists often return home with rattan baskets, ceramic jugs and brocade.

Other Ways of Shipping to Malaysia

Other Ways of Shipping to Malaysia

As well as sending parcels, baggage and luggage to Malaysia you could look into the following alternatives for shipping items internationally, especially if you need to send large, bulky items like furniture.

Air Freight to Malaysia

If you are moving to Malaysia and need to send big items like a TV or table, you could consider using air freight. It normally takes one to two days to get your items from one airport to another. It can be an expensive service, however. Plus, you have to pay for a customs agent to handle customs clearance for you. Plus, you need to work out how to get your items to and from the airport, which means that costs could quickly mount up. If you send internationally by air freight to Malaysia your items will likely arrive at one of the major international airports, such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Kuching.

Sea Freight and Container Shipping to Malaysia

To ship even bulkier items to Malaysia you could consider sea freight or container shipping. This can be cheaper than air freight, but you will still need to hire a customs agent and will need to arrange how to get your items to and from the ports, which means it could cost more than expected. When using container shipping to Malaysia your items will most likely arrive by ship at a major sea port, such as Port Kelang, Penang or Sandakan.

Shipping Goods to Malaysia

You need be familiar with current Malaysian customs rules when shipping goods to Malaysia. You should be fully aware of any duty that you need to pay and what items are allowed to be shipped to Malaysia, which items are restricted, and which are entirely disallowed. Take a look at the prohibited items and customs sections on this page for more information.
