Customs Information

Please take a moment to review the important customs information before shipping to Myanmar.

Personal Effects Customs Clearance Myanmar

Holiday baggage and other time sensitive packages should not be sent on this route.

The volume of shipments sent to this destination across the last 12 weeks has not been sufficient to meet our minimum number of on time shipments required for holiday baggage approval.

To clear personal effects and household goods into Myanmar, the shipper will need to provide us with a copy of their passport, a copy of their airline ticket, a copy of their work permit and a letter of employment (letter for returning citizens must include the position and duration of employment).

If the shipper is a returning resident, in addition to the letter of employment mentioned above, they will also need to provide a copy of their Myanmar NRC Card and copy of the airport entry stamp page from their passport.

The shipper’s and receiver’s name must be the same and appear in exactly the same way as it is printed on the supplied passport copy. The shipper must also be present in Myanmar for customs clearance. We are advised that customs clearance for foreigners and returning citizens is approximately 1 week.

All goods imported duty free by a foreigner must be exported upon future departure from Myanmar and only one air shipment is permitted duty free per shipper.

Customers are currently limited to a maximum declared value of £280 / $400USD / 400€ /$500 AUD for shipments entering Myanmar in order to avoid delays with customs clearance and additional duty and taxes being applied.  The declared value is for customs purposes only and does not affect the level of Send My Bag Complimentary Cover selected at the time of booking.  Further information is available on our FAQ page.

General Personal Effects Customs Information

Personal effects are typically defined as used items which have been in the sender's possession for 6 months or more. If your shipment is checked by  customs and is found to contain brand new or commercial items, you shipment may not be assessed as personal effects. Keep this in mind if you are sending Christmas gifts or other new items. Please check with customs so you are aware of potential customs duties, follow any advice given and attach all necessary documentation.

In order to demonstrate that your shipment consists of personal effects, you will be required to complete a brief non-generic packing list online, entries to be made in the format: "5 x Cotton Dresses, 2 x Jeans, 3 x Pair of Gloves", and so on, rather than as "10 x Used Clothing".

As customs processes and allowances vary by country, we advise all customers take 5 minutes to check how their personal circumstances and what they are sending will be assessed under the prevailing customs regulations of the destination.

More information is available on our customs information page.

About Myanmar

About Myanmar

Myanmar (also known as Burma) is a country in South East Asia bordering Laos, Thailand and China. For many years Myanmar was cut off from the rest of the world, ruled as it was by a military junta. Today, with a new government in place and reforms being implemented, Myanmar has opened up to the rest of the world again.

Visitors to Myanmar can anticipate fascinating cities, brilliant architecture, religious sites and beautiful natural landscapes. They can also enjoy trekking to stunning locations, such as the fantastic Inle Lake.

Myanmar has a tropical climate, with monsoon season lasting from May to October. The best time to visit is between November and February when temperatures are lower than the excessive temperatures to be endured between March and May, which often reach over 40°C (104°F).

Please explore this page further to find out about Send My Bag’s shipping service to Myanmar.

Other Ways of Shipping to Myanmar

Other Ways of Shipping to Myanmar

As well as sending parcels, baggage and luggage to Myanmar you could look into the following alternatives for shipping items internationally, especially if you need to send large, bulky items like furniture.

Air Freight to Myanmar

Air freight is one possibility for sending large items, such as a table or a chest of drawers, to Myanmar. It usually takes one to two days to send items by air freight, which is fast, but the service can be quite expensive. The amount you pay depends on the weight and size of your shipment. You will probably also have to get a customs agent to handle customs clearance for you. And, you need to work out how to get your items to and from the airport, which means that costs could quickly increase. If you send internationally by air freight to Myanmar your items will likely arrive at one of the major airports, such as Yangon or Mandalay International Airports.

Sea Freight and Container Shipping to Myanmar

Instead of air freight, you could try sea freight or container shipping to move your possessions to Myanmar. Sea freight usually means shipping items in large containers loaded onto cargo ships. This option can be cheaper than air freight but it takes much longer for your items to reach you. Note that you will still need to use the services of a customs agent and will need to sort out how to get your items to and from the ports. When using container shipping to Myanmar your items will most likely arrive by ship at one of the major sea ports, such as Yangon.

Shipping Goods to Myanmar

You need to find out about the current customs rules when shipping goods to Myanmar. You should be fully aware of any duty that needs to be paid and what items are permitted to be shipped to Myanmar, which items are restricted, and which are forbidden. Take a look at the prohibited items and customs sections on this page for more information.
