Vietnam Customs Information

Customs Information

Please take a moment to review the important customs information before shipping to Vietnam.

Personal Effects Customs Clearance Vietnam

Holiday baggage and other time sensitive packages should not be sent on this route.

The volume of shipments sent to this destination across the last 12 weeks has not been sufficient to meet our minimum number of on time shipments required for holiday baggage approval.

In order to be considered for duty relief, the consignee must provide the physical stamped copy of their Vietnam Customs Declaration Form which is obtained from customs at the airport of landing and must be dated within 30 days of the shipment’s arrival in Vietnam. This is posted directly to our courier partner in Vietnam. In addition, a copy of the named receiver’s passport must be provided along with an image of their entry stamp and flight ticket, and if held, their visa, work permit, or residence card. Due to the information required for clearance, shipments cannot be cleared by customs unless the consignee has already arrived in Vietnam.

Customs will generally also exempt a consignee from paying duty on smaller shipments of negligible value, providing the declared value of the shipment is under 1,000,000 VND / $40 USD.

On this route you are required to visit the destination country’s official customs website and make yourself aware of any requirements, processes or fees, which may be due based on your personal circumstances and what you are shipping.

Upon arrival in the destination you agree to comply with any customs processes, provide the customs authority with any information they request and to discuss the clearance of the shipment directly with the customs authority or our delivery partner in the destination.

General Personal Effects Customs Information

Personal effects are typically defined as used items which have been in the sender's possession for 6 months or more. If your shipment is checked by  customs and is found to contain brand new or commercial items, you shipment may not be assessed as personal effects. Keep this in mind if you are sending Christmas gifts or other new items. Please check with customs so you are aware of potential customs duties, follow any advice given and attach all necessary documentation.

In order to demonstrate that your shipment consists of personal effects, you will be required to complete a brief non-generic packing list online, entries to be made in the format: "5 x Cotton Dresses, 2 x Jeans, 3 x Pair of Gloves", and so on, rather than as "10 x Used Clothing".

As customs processes and allowances vary by country, we advise all customers take 5 minutes to check how their personal circumstances and what they are sending will be assessed under the prevailing customs regulations of the destination.

More information is available on our customs information page.

Customs Clearance Time

Our historical statistics for this route indicate that if the customs authority stops your bag they will on average take 7 working days to process it and release it back to us for delivery.

About Vietnam

About Vietnam

Vietnam is a country in South East Asia, beside Laos and Cambodia and to the south of China. It is a communist state where Vietnamese is the official language but English is increasingly learned as a second language. The country covers an area of 325, 361 km2 and has a population of 93, 421, 835 people. The country’s currency is the Dong.

Although not the capital city, Ho Chi Minh City, located in the south, is the largest in the country and is a fascinating destination for tourists. The city brings an assault on the senses, with its bustling streets and markets and colourful temples and pagodas.

An alternative city to visit is Hanoi, in the north of the country, which boasts some beautiful French colonial architecture, such as the Hanoi Opera House.

There are a number of excursions you can take beyond the main cities, such as a visit to Tay Ninh, the hub of the Cao Dai religion. Nearby there are also the Cu Chi tunnels, which Vietnamese villagers dug to keep them out of reach of US bombing during the war. Or, you could visit the Mekong Delta and witness its lush landscape and rice paddies.

Numerous outdoor pursuits can be enjoyed in Vietnam, such as riding in dug-out canoes, taking an elephant ride, or trekking into forests or around the mountains, including Sa Pa.

Or, you can enjoy stunning beaches, such as Phu Quoc and Nha Trans.

Other Ways of Shipping to Vietnam

Other Ways of Shipping to Vietnam

As well as sending parcels, baggage and luggage to Vietnam you could look into the following alternatives for shipping items internationally, especially if you need to send large, bulky items like furniture.

Air Freight to Vietnam

If you need to send large items like a TV or a table to facilitate your move to Vietnam, you could consider using air freight. This usually takes only one to two days but it can be an expensive service. You will also have to pay for a customs agent to handle customs clearance for you. Plus, you need to transport your items to and from the airport, which means that costs could quickly mount up. If you send internationally by air freight to Vietnam your items will likely arrive at one of the major international airports, such as Da Nang, Cam Ranh or Hanoi-Noi-Bai.

Sea Freight and Container Shipping to Vietnam

To transport even larger items to Vietnam you could think about sea freight or container shipping. This is, more often than not, a cheaper option than air freight, but you will still need to hire a customs agent and will need to get your items to and from the ports somehow, which would mean extra costs to cover. When using container shipping to Vietnam your items will most likely arrive by ship at a major sea port, such as Ho Chi Minh City or Haiphong.

Shipping Goods to Vietnam

You should research thoroughly current Vietnam customs rules when shipping goods to Vietnam. You need to know about any duty that you need to pay and what items are allowed to be shipped to Vietnam, which items are restricted, and which are entirely disallowed.  Take a look at the prohibited items and customs sections on this page for more information.
